Whether you know it or not, there is a rhythm inside of you and everyone around you.
This ubiquitous rhythm is the central theme to the US debut of Rhythm of Human from Korean-based company Ambiguous Dance. The story follows a Korean man as he tries to find his own rhythm in society.

By weaving simple gestures of everyday life into the piece choreographer Kim Bo-Ram makes the theme relevant and accessible for viewers. “Every moving and breathing creature takes form as a rhythm, a movement, and an expression of dance,” he says. However, it’s a struggle differentiating oneself from the pack.
Dancers wear the clothes of everyman – think business suits, pajamas, underwear – moving in unison, weaving in and out of patterns with military precision, furthering the idea of indistinguishability. At one point the group dons sunglasses, giving the piece a Matrix-like surreal quality. “Beating our own drum, on the whole, gets lost…,” says Bo-Ram. “I have sought to tell a story of the difficulty and beauty of acknowledging freedom of expression.” The piece promises to uncover the hidden dance of life, throwing a spotlight on how to discover the uniqueness inside each of us.

Rhythm of Human premieres at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason on May 31 at 8 p.m., as part of the San Francisco International Arts Festival, before the tour continues to Philadelphia and Seattle. General Admission tickets are $25, available at www.sfiaf.org or 415-399-9554.
